Maria Montessori (1870-1952) was born in Ancona, Italy and followed a scientific education to become the first woman physician in Italy. She specialized in pediatrics and also supported the woman's suffrage move- ment, peace efforts and child labor law reform.
What is known as the "Montessori Method" was developed from her observation and work with Rome's most disadvantaged children. She studied the children and their natural curiosity and developmental periods, then Montessori devised activities and equipment to facilitate learning. Soon, the most prominent citizens and leaders chose this method of education for their children.
Montessori schools have been established throughout Europe, Asia, North and South America, Africa and the Pacific. In 1948, Dr. Maria Montessori was nominated for the Noble Peace Prize.
Montessori schools are not a franchise; they are schools that choose to use Montessori's name. There is much diversity amongst the schools depending on the vision of the directors and the communities which they serve.
